5 new cultural asset holders for “Karate and kobudo”

On May 7th 2013, the Okinawa Prefecture has announced that 5 masters have been recognized as Intangible Cultural Asset holder in the Field of Okinawan Karate and Martial Arts with Weaponry. They are: Ishikawa Seitoku sensei (87 years old, Shorin-ryu), Uehara Takenobu sensei (83 years old, Uechi-ryu), Hichiya Yoshio sensei (82 years old, Goju-ryu), Nakamoto Masahiro sensei (75 years old, Kobudo)and Higaonna Morio sensei (74 years old, Goju-ryu). "Karate and kobudo" were recognized as an Intangible Cultural Asset in 1997 by the Okinawa Prefecture and there are now 14 masters who have been recognized as such asset holder.

 

In 1997, the first recognized masters were:

Nagamine Shoshin sensei

Yagi Meitoku sensei

Itokazu Seiki sensei

 

In 2000, the following masters were also recognized as asset holders:

Iha Koshin sensei

Tomoyose Ryuko sensei

Nakazato Shugoro sensei

Nakazato Joen sensei

Miyahira Katsuya sensei

Wakugawa Kosei sensei
